Gender Role Identity and Depression in High School Students

Abstract

|
Objectives: This study was done to identify types of gender role identity in high school students and to investigate the relationship between types of gender role identity and depression.
Methods: The research design for this study was a descriptive survey design using convenience sampling. Data were collected through self report questionnaires from 665 high school students. Data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0 program.
Results: The androgyny gender role identity was most common (31.1%). Of the types of gender role identity that had a significant relationship with depression. Androgyny gender role identity had the lowest significant relationship to level of depression.
Conclusion: This study confirmed that gender role identity perceived by adolescent is one of critical factors influencing their depression. Thus, it is necessary that school nurses and health teachers should provide individual and environmental interventions to help high school students develop gender role identity toward androgyny.
